Expectant mothers in remote rural areas in Uganda often use motorbike taxis to each health centers. Ever since the outbreak of the corona virus, these means of transport have been banned, as have all forms of public transport. Our local volunteers come to the rescue.
VSO volunteer Wangdic Justine: “Pregnant women still have to go the the clinic for checkups and to give birth. I just took a lady to a health center on my bicycle. I usually use it to travel from village to village, where I provide information about, for example, mother and childcare and malaria. Now I also talk about corona and explain the measures taken by the government.
By providing extra training to volunteers like Wangdic Justine, we ensure that women can continue to have access to the right information and essential care during the #coronacrisis. Do you also want to help? Make a donation in my donation box!

Healthcare systems are under immense pressure worldwide. Doctors and nurses work around the clock while at the same time having an increased risk of getting infected by the coronavirus themselves. VSO trains local health care providers in developing countries in Africa and Asia how to deal with these risks, how to protect themselves and their community and how to prevent the virus from spreading even further. These local health care providers pass on this knowledge to the communities in which they live. They share their knowledge about the importance of good hygiene and they provide necessary means such as soap and hand sanitizer to prevent the virus from spreading. In the Netherlands we have our own Irma Sluis, the sign language interpreter who now translates all cabinet press conferences on te Covid-19 crisis. In this way, the deaf and hard of hearing also receive all the important information on protecting yourself against the coronavirus.
